Case Style: The People v. Douglas Gordon Bradford

Case Number:

Judge: Curtis B. Rappe

Court: Superior Court, Los Angeles County, California

Plaintiff's Attorney: John Lewin

Defendant's Attorney: Bob Shapiro

Description: Los Angeles, CA - The People of the State of California charged Douglas Gordon Bradford, age 62, with first-degree murder in conjunction with the death of his girlfriend, Lynne Knight, 26 years ago.

Bradford briefly dated Knight, age 28, decades ago but she called things off and the State claimed that Defendant stalked and killed her by garroting her and then stabbing her 15 times.

Bradford was arrested in 2009 after a wire like the one used to kill Knight was found in Bradford's Mother's garage.

Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office Press Release:

TORRANCE – An Orange County engineer who once dated a Torrance nurse found murdered inside her Torrance apartment in 1979 was arrested today on a murder warrant filed by the District Attorney’s office.

Deputy District Attorney John Lewin with the Major Crimes Division said Douglas Gordon Bradford, 57 (dob 12-13-51), was charged Tuesday in case YA075023 with one count of murder in the Aug. 29, 1979 garrotement and fatal stabbing of Lynne Knight. The complaint included the special allegations of use of a deadly weapon.

The 28-year-old nurse had been stabbed more than 15 times and strangled with a homemade garrote that was found near her body in her Anza Avenue apartment. Lewin said Bradford and the victim, who was originally from Canada, had dated and later broken up. At the time, he was a California State Long Beach engineering student.

Lewin said old-fashioned police work by detectives from the Torrance Police Department’s Cold Case Unit helped solve the case.

The Costa Mesa resident is being held on $1.02 million bail. If convicted, he faces 26 years to life in prison.

Bradford is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at Torrance Superior Court, Department 4.

Outcome: Defendant was found guilty and was sentenced to 26 years to life in prison.
