Case Number:
Judge:
Court: Circuit Court, Davidson County, Tennessee
Plaintiff's Attorney: Brian Holmgren
Defendant's Attorney: Mary-Kathryn Harcomber
Description: Nashville, TN - The State of Tennessee charged Jasmine Randers, age 36, neglect in conjunction with the death of her 5-day-old child. Ms. RAnders has a history of mental illness.
Randers admitted having the child in bed with her and when she woke up she found the child had died. The cause of death could not be determined.
The State would not go forward with a plea deal unless she agreed to be sterilized. Newspapers reported that Davidson County, Tennessee had made sterilization part of plea deals before in a few cases.
The sterilization condition was objected to by the defense and Davidson County District Attorney Glenn Funk agreed to not make sterilization a condition of any plea deals in the future.
Outcome: Randers was found to be not guilty by reason of insanity and was institutionalized.
