Case Style: State of Michigan v. Coonan
Case Number:
Judge: Kim David Glaspie
Court: Circuit Court, Bay County, Michigan
Plaintiff's Attorney: Tuscola County Assistant Prosecutor Erik Wanick
Defendant's Attorney: Matthew L. Reyes
Description: The State of Michigan charged Bay County Commissioner, Kim J, Coonan, age 59, with misdemeanor assault in an alleged assault of former fellow commissioner Joe Davis on November 6, 2012 in front of Our Lady of the Visitation Church, which was doubling as a polling place. Coonan and Davis were running against one another for the county commissioner post.
Davis claimed that Coonan pulled up some of Davis' yard signs and threatened to kill him.
A local newspaper reported that: "Coonan testified that he was offended by the signs being in his church's yard and as he was removing them, Davis angrily charged him, preventing him from leaving the scene. Coonan said a shoving match ensued and that he slapped Davis once or twice. After Davis fell, Coonan said he went to his vehicle and left."
Outcome: Not guilty.
