Helena, MT - Jane Doe sued Jehovah's Witnesses, Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York on negligence theories claiming that they failed to report possible sexual abuse of her as a child at the hands of a congregation member.

The abuse of Plaintiff and others was reported to church elders but was not reported to state authorities as required by Montana law.

The Defendants claimed that they were not liable for matters involving internal ecclesiastical proceedings.

Outcome: Plaintiff's verdict for $4 million in compensatory damages and $30 million in punitive damages against Watchtower and $1 million against the Christian Witness Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.
