Description: The family of James Parker Coogler, age 50, sued Gallatin County Deputy Don Peterson on a civil rights violation theory under 42 U.S.C. 1983 claiming that Deputy Peterson used excessive force when he shot and killed Coogler during a police standoff that had lasted several hours and during the Coogler shot at the officers at the scene five times.

Deputy Peterson denied wrongdoing. He and other witnesses claimed that Coogler was huffing paint thinner.

Outcome: Defendant's verdict in 10 minutes.
