Court: Circuit Court, Spartanburg County, South Carolina
Plaintiff's Attorney:
Defendant's Attorney: Clarence Rauch Wise
Description: Spartanburg, SC - The State of South Carolina charged Stephanie Irene Greene, age 39, with homicide by child abuse, involuntary manslaughter and unlawful conduct toward a child as a result of her 6-week-old daughter dying from ingesting morphine from breast milk. Alexis Greene died, according to testimony, from a morphine overdose in November, 2010.
Greene was taking several drugs, including MS-Contin, Vicoprofen and Klonopin. The fact that she was taking pain medications was not disclosed to her obstetrician during her pregnancy.
The State asserted that Greene, a nurse, should have known of the dangerous condition she created by taking the pain medications and breast feeding.
Outcome: Defendant was found guilty and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
