Abigail Zwerner, a first-grad teacher in Newport News, Virginia was shot by a 6-year-old student who brought his mother’s gun to class in January 2023. She sued Ebony Parker claiming that the assistant principal failed and refused to respond to four separate reports from staff members that the boy might have had a gun with him that day at the Richneck Elementary School.

The Defendant denied wrongdoing claiming that the was “unforeseeable,” “unthinkable” and “unprecedented,” and that Ms. Parker was being blamed only in hindsight.

The boy's mother was charged with felony child neglect.

The bullet fired at her ierced her hand and entered her chest, causing her lung to collapse. She has had several surgeries but still suffers from the shooting.

Outcome: Plaintiff's verdict for $10 million.
