Description: Monroe, Louisiana criminal defense lawyer represented defendant charged with second degree murder.


On August 3, 2017, defendant, Davontae Demarquis Coleman, was indicted for the second degree murder of Junius Benton, a violation of La. R.S. 14:30.1. Coleman was tried by a judge after waiving his right to jury trial on March 15-16, 2021. The judge took the matter under advisement and entered a verdict of guilty of negligent homicide on April 12, 2021. Thereafter, the judge sentenced Coleman to imprisonment at hard labor for three years, with credit for time served, on July 2, 2021.

Outcome: Reversed.
