Description: Tom Douglas sued Manor Care, Inc. d/b/a Heartland of Charleston Nursing Home on a medical negligence (medical malpractice) theory for her wrongful death claiming that Defendant failed for properly care for, nourish and hydrate Mrs. Douglas, age 87, and, as a direct result, she died. Mrs. Douglas suffered from dementia. She lost weight while at Heartland. Plaintiff claimed that the facility was not adequately staffed to care for his Mother.

Plaintiff claimed that Defendant's employees did not feed or care for his Mother.

In September 2009, Tom Douglas took his mother to Heartland of Charleston while waiting for space to open in another nursing home. Dorothy Douglas suffered from Alzheimer's, dementia, Parkinson's disease and several other conditions.

The defenses asserted by Defendant are not available.

Outcome: Plaintiff's verdict for $91.5 million including $11.5 million in compensatory damages and $90 million in punitive damages.
