Description: Anchorage, AK - Anchorage Couple Found Not Guilty For Starting Sockeye Fire In 2015

The State of Alaska charged Greg Imig, age 61, and Amy DeWitt, age 43, with burning without a permit, burning without clearing area, uncontrolled spread of fire / Damage to property of another, failure to estingish / leaving fire unattended,criminally negligent burning, to the 2015 wildfire.

The fire, which apparently started in a burn pit on the western edge of the couple's property, burned over 7,000 acres and destroyed 100 structures, including 55 homes.

Defendants denied starting the fire which started on a June day when temperatures were in the 80s and the wind was blowing 5 to 10 miles per hour.

It was not disputed that DeWitt burned debris and branches in a small fire while preparing dinner.

If convicted, the couple faced possible jail time, fines and restitution to victims and $16 million in costs (twice the cost of fighting the fire).
