Description: Oklahoma City, OK: Civil rights lawyer represented Plaintiff, who sued Defendant on Constitutional violation theory.

Plaintiff sought to force the state to recognize a non-binary gender designation on birth certificates.

It all began in December of 2019 when Kit Vivien Lorelied applied to make changes to their Oklahoma birth certificate. The changes they requested were to their name and sex. Lorelied is non-binary and uses the pronouns they/them/their.

After the State Department of Health denied Lorelied's request, a lawsuit was filed against several members of the Oklahoma State Department of Health in August of 2020.

Outcome: The Attorney General's Office stipulated to entry of a judgment in favor of the Plaintiff's position.
