New Orleans Man Sentenced for Being Felon in Possession of a Firearm

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced that DAVID COULTER, age 34, of New Orleans, was sentenced on June 27, 2024 by U.S. District Judge Wendy B. Vitter to the statutory maximum of 120 months incarceration after he previously pled guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(2).

Judge Vitter also ordered that COULTER be placed on supervised release for three (3) years following his release from imprisonment and pay a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.

According to court documents, COULTER has a prior conviction for possessing cocaine and multiple convictions for being a felon in possession of a firearm or weapon in Orleans Parish. Due to this criminal history, he is prohibited from having a firearm.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and New Orleans Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mike Trummel of the Violent Crime Unit prosecuted this matter.

Outcome:

Defendant was found guilty and sentenced to 120 months incarceration. Judge Vitter also ordered that COULTER be placed on supervised release for three (3) years following his release from imprisonment and pay a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.
