In 2018, Trotter was charged with attempted murder, first-degree burglary, and fourth-degree criminal mischief. The court granted a change of venue from Worth County to Bremer County. At trial, Trotter, an African American, challenged the composition of the jury, asserting jury pools over the previous year underrepresented African American potential jurors in Bremer County. The court denied that challenge, and the all-white jury found Trotter guilty of attempted murder and the lesser included criminal trespass.
Outcome: Guilty.
Affirmed on appeal.
