The October 15, 2020 incident began when Officer Johnathan Goldsmith responded to a suspicious vehicle call at Abney Baptist Church off Roberts Road in Kershaw County, which is a rural area. Body camera footage shows Sims exited his car, slurred his words and admitted that he had been drinking beer. Goldsmith wrote in his initial incident report, and later testified this week, that he witnessed an empty gun holster in Sims’ car, at which point he began to handcuff him.


Outcome: Defendant was found guilty and was sentenced to one year in prison.
