3M's Combat Arms Earplugs (CAE) mass tort was a product liability lawsuit that involved nearly 250,000 lawsuits against the company:

Background
The lawsuit was filed by U.S. military service members, veterans, and commercial users who claimed that 3M's CAE earplugs were defective and caused hearing damage. The earplugs were used by the U.S. military from 2003 to 2015, including in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Settlement
In August 2023, 3M agreed to pay $6.01 billion to settle the lawsuits. The settlement was the largest mass tort multidistrict litigation in U.S. history. 3M did not admit liability in the settlement.
Terms
The settlement will be paid out from 2023 to 2029, with the option to pay up to $1 billion in 3M stock or cash if 98% of participants are satisfied.
Timeline
New deadlines for the settlement include:

MSA I: Initial registration date is January 25, 2024, and the final date is March 25, 2024

MSA III: Initial date is December 20, 2023, and the final date is February 20, 2024
