Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) provides monthly cash payments to people who have a disability that prevents them from working. SSDI benefits are based on a person's average earnings over their career, and are adjusted annually for inflation. SSDI benefits are generally modest, but can be a significant source of income for many beneficiaries.
Here are some key facts about SSDI benefits:
Eligibility
To be eligible for SSDI, a person must have a disability or blindness, and have enough work history.
Benefit amount
The average monthly SSDI benefit in April 2024 was $1,538, or roughly $18,456 annually.
Waiting period
There is a five-month waiting period after the onset of disability before payments begin.
Medicare eligibility
After receiving SSDI for two years, a person becomes eligible for Medicare.
Family benefits
A spouse or child of an SSDI beneficiary may be eligible for benefits.
Benefit formula
The benefit formula is progressive, meaning that lower-wage workers receive a greater share of their career-average earnings.
Benefit adjustments
SSDI benefits are generally adjusted each year for inflation.
Benefit offset
SSDI benefits may be offset if a disabled worker also receives other disability benefits, such as workers' compensation.
My SSA account
A person can create a My SSA account to get estimates of their potential benefits, including SSDI and retirement benefits.
