The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) is a federal law that sets standards for wages, overtime, child labor, and recordkeeping for most private and public employees. The FLSA was passed by Congress in 1938 to improve working conditions.

Here are some of the FLSA's requirements:

Minimum wage: Covered employees must be paid at least the federal minimum wage.
Overtime pay: Covered employees must be paid one and a half times their regular rate of pay for overtime hours.
Child labor: Children under 16 cannot work more than certain hours in nonagricultural jobs, and children under 18

cannot work in certain dangerous jobs.

Recordkeeping: Employers must keep records.

The FLSA is administered by the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). The FLSA also provides civil and criminal remedies, and allows employees to file private lawsuits
