Scope

The FCRA's purpose is to promote the accuracy, fairness, and privacy of consumer information.

Rights

The FCRA gives consumers rights to access and correct their information, and to limit how their information is used.

Obligations

The FCRA imposes obligations on CRAs and parties that use or supply consumer information to CRAs. For example, CRAs must follow reasonable procedures to protect the confidentiality and accuracy of consumer information. Parties that use consumer information for credit, insurance, or employment purposes must notify the consumer if adverse action is taken based on the information.

Violations

Violations of the FCRA can result in fines, damages, attorney fees, and criminal charges.
Examples of consumer rights

You can request that your name be removed from marketing lists.

You can place an active duty alert in your credit report if you are active duty military personnel.

You can know if a person has taken adverse action against you because of information in your credit report.
