Section 1983 of the United States Code protects individuals from the deprivation of their rights, privileges, or immunities by a person acting under color of state law. Prisoners can use this law to sue state correctional officials in federal court if the conditions of their confinement violate constitutional standards. These conditions include:

Physical security
Adequate medical treatment
Freedom of religious expression
Freedom from physical, sexual, and mental abuse
Freedom from cruel and unusual punishments
Freedom from discrimination due to race, sex, gender identity, faith, or disability

To succeed on a Section 1983 claim, a plaintiff must prove that:

A right secured by the Constitution or federal law was deprived
The defendants were acting under color of state law

Section 1983 lawsuits are a major part of the civil caseloads in U.S. District Courts. One in every ten civil lawsuits is a Section 1983 lawsuit.
