Description:
Chester, Illinois family law lawyers represented the parties in an adoption.
Stephanie Cook, filed a petition for adoption on May 5, 2021, seeking to adopt the minor child, I.L. Stephanie was the sole petitioner in the case and requested relief in the form of granting the adoption of the minor child by Stephanie and to change the minor's last name to that of Stephanie's. On October 22, 2022, Stephanie married. On January 19, 2024, the circuit court granted Stephanie's motion and found respondent, Andrew Lamont, unfit, subsequently terminating his parental rights. Respondent appeals the judgment of the circuit court alleging that, because Stephanie did not join her husband on the petition for adoption, the circuit court lacked subject matter jurisdiction.
