Case Style: State of Wisconsin v. Tarence Anton Banks
Case Number: 2000CM002650
Judge: Eugene Gasiorkiewicz
Court: Circuit Court, Racine County, Wisconsin
Plaintiff's Attorney: Jacalyn LaBre
Defendant's Attorney: Paul FX Schwartz
Description: The State of Wisconsin charged Tarence A. Banks, age 32, first-degree murder in conjunction with the killing of a 12-year-old Marize Jones during a drive-by shooting in 2007.
Banks was one of five people charged in the shooting, described as retaliation for an earlier shooting the same day in an ongoing gang dispute. Three have been convicted, and the case against a fourth is still pending.
A victim in one of the earlier shootings identified Banks as one of the people firing guns.
The defense suggested police bungled the investigation by not examining the role of the lead detective in the case, who owned a white van like one witnesses said they saw go by during the shooting, and challenging the credibility of the key witnesses - other shooters - and the lack of physical evidence placing Banks at the scene.
Outcome: Not guilty
