Adrion Curry was placed in the custody of the Alabama Department of Human Resources in 2013, when he was 8 years old. His DHR case worker, Kristi Kelley, and foster care provider, Becky Van Gilder, were defendants in the case.
Adrion suffered from sickle cell anemia but was not give the medication he needed to manage the problem and he had difficulty breathing. He developed acute chest syndrome in May 2013 and died.
According to Plaintiff's counsel: “Defendants Christy Kelley, Becky Van Gilder… negligently, wantonly or willfully harmed A.C. by violating appropriate checklists, guidelines, DHR rules, statutes, regulations or court orders requiring them to monitor and ensure that A.C.’s medical condition was properly managed and controlled,...”
Outcome: Plaintiff's verdict for $15 million.
