Description: Saguache, Colorado civil litigation lawyers represented the parties in a shareholder dispute with a tortious interfence with contract counterclaim.
Tim Coleman was the majority shareholder (70%) of Coleman Ranches, Inc. (the Ranch), a family-owned ranch where his son
Calvin worked. Tim’s sister — and Calvin’s aunt — Lenn, was the minority shareholder (30%) of the Ranch. Calvin worked at the Ranch as an at-will employee from July 2012 until July 2022 and has lived there rent-free since June 2016. For five generations, the Ranch has been passed down within the Coleman family, and
Calvin — along with other family members — believed that the Ranch would be passed down to him in turn. By 2016, after his grandfather Jim Coleman had passed away, Calvin had substantially stepped up his duties, and according to his sister Heather Coleman, Calvin ran the Ranch.

Outcome: Reversed. The trial court’s reduction of Calvin’s attorney fee request based on overstaffing is reversed. The damages award of attorney fees in favor of Calvin and against Lenn is increased by $42,406.38. The damages award is affirmed in all other regards.
