South Bend Man Sentenced for Theft of Government Funds
From 2005 through 2023, Jake Gregory Aarreberg, 50 years old, of South Bend, Indiana, falsely claimed to be a disabled military veteran and presented fraudulent military service records in order to obtain government benefits. As a result of his fraud, Aarreberg obtained VA medical benefits totaling over $96,000.00, and Social Security disability benefits totaling over $129,000.00.
This case was investigated by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Inspector General and the Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Luke N. Reilander.
Outcome:
Defendant was found guilty and sentenced to 2 years of probation with 8 months home detention and was ordered to pay $226,389.56 in restitution to the victims of the offense.
