Defendant's Attorney: Martyn B. Hill, Simone Michelle De Lacey

Description: Houston, Texas employment law lawyer represented Plaintiff on an employment discrimination theory.

"Employment discrimination is the practice of treating a person or group differently than another person or group on the basis of a protected characteristic, such as race, religion, sex, or national origin. This can include discrimination in hiring, firing, promotion, pay, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Employment discrimination is illegal in the United States under a number of federal and state laws. The most important federal law is Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Other important federal laws include the Equal Pay Act of 1963, which prohibits pay discrimination on the basis of sex; the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of age; the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability; and the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of genetic information.

State laws also prohibit employment discrimination. The laws of some states are more comprehensive than the federal laws, and they may prohibit discrimination on the basis of additional protected characteristics, such as sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status.

If you believe you have been the victim of employment discrimination, you may file a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The EEOC is a federal agency that enforces the federal laws prohibiting employment discrimination. You may also file a complaint with your state's fair employment practices agency.

If you file a complaint with the EEOC, the EEOC will investigate your complaint and try to resolve it through mediation. If mediation is not successful, the EEOC may file a lawsuit on your behalf. You may also file a lawsuit on your own behalf.

If you are successful in your lawsuit, you may be entitled to back pay, front pay, compensatory damages, and punitive damages. You may also be entitled to reinstatement to your job, with back pay and benefits.

Employment discrimination is a serious problem, but there are laws in place to protect you from it. If you believe you have been the victim of employment discrimination, you should contact an attorney to discuss your rights."
