Wichita, KS - Former Wichita Lawyer Sentenced For Embezzlement

A former lawyer in Wichita was sentenced today to 36 months in custody for embezzling from clients, U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said. He was ordered to pay restitution of more than $603,000.

Christopher O’Brien, 69, Wichita, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement from an estate. In his plea, O’Brien admitted he embezzled more than $132,000 from the bankruptcy estate of Roger L. and Maria K. Altis while he was representing the couple.

O’Brien voluntarily surrendered his license to practice law in Kansas.


Charge:


Embezzlement against an estate in violation of 18 U.S.C. 153.

Outcome: Defendant was sentenced to 36 months imprisonment; 2 years supervised release; $100 assessment; and ordered to pay $603,841.31 in restitution.
