Description: Environmental pollution claims. The State of Michigan claimed that Great Lakes Steel Division of Ecorse Mill and Zug Island Steel unlawfully polluted the Detroit River over 75 times during 1995 and 1996 in violation of their water discharge permits with 3,000 to 5,000 gallons of crude coal tar when their holding tank transfer pumps failed.

Outcome: Defendant agreed to pay $45,000 in penalties and $2,200 in investigative costs and to take corrective actions to insure that such incidents do not occur in the future.
