Description: Wrongful death claim by Jessica Salgat against Charles Connors and Corporate Bank Transit arising out of an automobile accident on January 17, 2001 in which Raymond J. Salgat, age 26, was killed. Charles D. Connors, 46, of Whittemore, was northbound on M-13 near Kitchen Road around 6 a.m. when his vehicle skidded on ice, crossed the center line and struck Salgat's vehicle, which was southbound. Connors was a courier for Corporate Bank Transit, and was headed to his Iosco County home after having delivered paperwork the evening before in the Detroit area. He was driving a pickup leased by Corporate Bank Transit from Connors. Mr. Salgats burned to death in his car after the impact. Connors was not seriously injured. The Salgats began dating in high school and were married shortly after graduating and had two minor children.
Outcome: The jury awarded the plaintiffs $92,000 for financial support and services that Salgat would have provided between the time of his death and Thursday; $6.5 million for future financial support and services, until 2050, when natural death would have been expected; $500,000 for loss of companionship so far; and $2.3 million for future loss of companionship.
